Arduino-Driven 3D Printed Aquarium Automation
For more information about our prototype, follow the aquaponics build log at HeliosLabs.blogspot.com. The model was made in SketchUp, converted into .STL format and imported into MakerBot's MakerWare software for 3D printing.
Lab-in-a-Box Concept
Visualizations for a "lab-in-a-box" concept. This project would later end up being further developed by another team, and is now called the "Darwin Toolbox."
B612 Foundation's Sentinel Telescope
![]() |
| The Sentinel is an infrared asteroid hunting space-based telescope to be launched in 2017 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9.. |
Based on the B612 Foundation's proposed Sentinel Telescope (covered here on Helios Labs) this SketchUp model was made to show the scale and basic features of the spacecraft. The animated .gif was made in GIMP after taking shots of the model from different angles in SketchUp. The model was rotated 10 degrees, 36 times for a complete 360 degree rotation. To see the original specs used to build up the model, see B612's data sheet here - or visit their website here.
This model is also now available for downloading on SketchUp's 3D Warehouse here. Enjoy!

Desktop DNA Printer Competition V.2
The entire V.2 proposal can be seen here on Scribd. An entry on HeliosLabs with more information can be found here.
This was a partial rebuild of the last proposal - and includes a completely new set of functional parts, including the rotary plates, regent lines, and a redesigned base to accommodate the PCR well. SketchUp, Layout, Vray, and GIMP were used on this project.
Desktop DNA Printer Competition
The entire proposal can be seen here on Scribd. An entry on HeliosLabs with more information (including an earlier alternate proposal) can be found here.
SketchUp, Vray, Layout, and GIMP were all used to create this layout. The DNA double helix used in the background of each page was created in SketchUp. I uploaded it to the 3D Warehouse - the first model I've uploaded in fact. Find it here and enjoy. Keep reading after the "read more" page break below.
LED Light Bulb Packaging & Display
Photographs of a test print of packaging graphics used by an LED manufacturer. The through-hole in the plastic packaging can be seen, as can the proposed hole on the graphic design. This will be fixed in the finalized version by a graphic designer as will some other small details.
A 3D conceptualization of an LED light bulb display. The display was simply created to give an idea of how the bulb packaging would look "on the shelf" as opposed to the image below where the bulbs are "floating" in mid-air.
3D image of an LED light bulb package featuring newly designed graphics created by a third party.
The graphics for these packages were created by a third-party graphic designer, and simply visualized in 3D to give the LED manufacturer an idea of how the final product would look in real life. A display was even created to give an idea of how the packages would look in a store, as opposed to just floating in mid-air, or sitting individually.
SketchUp 7 was used to create the packaging, bulbs, and displays, while the graphics used were supplied as .jpg files from a third party. The scene was rendered with Vray and edited with GIMP.

Product Design: LED Bulb Packaging

Some concept renderings using graphics developed for an LED company. The graphics were developed in Adobe Illustrator, converted to .jpeg files and used as textures for the packing in SketchUp & Vray. The graphics included an LED bulb that served as the basis for creating the 3D bulbs featured in the renderings.
